The Mechanical Engineering Association, FLAME organized an industrial visit to Carborundum Universal Limited, Electro Minerals Division, Edapally, for Mechanical students on 5th October 2013. Electro minerals are used as basic raw material in the manufacture of abrasives and refractories. They are also used for surface preparation, tile and paint industries, wafer slicing in solar cell manufacture, dental care and skin therapy.White Fused Alumina and Brown Fused Alumina are the major products in this plant.The manufacturing process are as follows: Basic inputs are fused using electric arcing. Then the resultant crude is crushed and graded. The key inputs for manufacture of electro minerals include bauxite, alumina, silica sand, raw petroleum coke and electricity.
