A talk on ‘Power System’ by Dr. K. K. Sasi, Professor, Amrita VishwaVidyapeetham, Coimbatore, was organized by LUMINA, EEE association on 5th October 2013. Prof. Dr. K. E. George, Principal, AISAT welcomed the gathering. The talk started with an introduction to AC & DC power transmission systems, its history and advantages of both systems. The energy consumption of different countries over the past years was shown to give an idea of the huge gap in energy consumption between our country and developed countries. He pointed out that per-capita energy consumption is considered as an indicator of development. Non-conventional energy sources are getting more priority now-a-days and we need to increase the share of energy produced from these sources. He also pointed out that the transmission and distribution loss in India has been increasing over the years and we need to reduce it. The talk gave an overview of the power system. The talk came to an end with a beautiful quote by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, “Electricity and water are more valuable for a nation than gold”.
