Innovative Solar Energy Technology and its Applications
The Dept of Electrical and Electronics Engineering organised a one day talk on Innovative Solar Energy Technology and its Applications on 15.02.2017. The resource person for the day was Dr. K P Vijayakumar Emeritus Professor Department of Physics CUSAT .
Dr K. P. Vijayakumar completed his MSc in 1977 and Ph.D in 1984. He demonstrated his high standards of teaching as a Lecturer in Department of Physics, St.Albert’s College, Cochin[1979-1987] and joined as a Reader [1987-1995] and finally as Professor in Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin. After his retirement in 2014, he is pursuing research as Emeritus Scientist, with assistance from CSIR.
He is an active beehive of research on Photovoltaics. His research focuses and specialization is in the area of development and characterization of thin film solar cells and transparent conducting oxide films, using wide variety of frontier materials by non vacuum methods specifically Chemical Spray Pyrolysis.
The presentation highlighted future directions in solar energy applications and strategies for the wide spread applications of such technologies especially in combating global warming and depletion of fossil fuel resources. At the conclusion part he highlighted the advantages in applying solar energy technology which could save money by reducing electricity and energy bills, increasing self-reliance and also helps in reducing pollution. Students had a useful interactive session with the resource person.
